Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Fort McMurray and surrounding areas;

- Lac La Biche Co. near Wiau Winefred and Grist Lakes
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Fort MacKay and Wallace Creek
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Fort McMurray and Anzac
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Gipsy Lake and Whitemud Falls
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Grand Rapids Wildland Prov. Park
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Janvier South and Conklin
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Mariana Lake
- R.M. of Wood Buffalo near Stony Mtn Prov. Park and Engstrom Lake
The weather agency says a low-pressure system will bring heavy rain to parts of northeastern Alberta starting Thursday night.
Between 40 and 60 mm is expected, going up to 75 mm where thunderstorms occur.
Meteorologist Sarah Hoffman tells Mix News in addition to the rain on Friday, there will also be wind gusts of up to 60 km/h.
“If you have those embedded thunderstorms that bring those heavier showers to the area and then you have stronger winds like that, you can have enhanced risk of tree damage and things like that, so something to be cognizant of on Friday.”
The weather system is expected to move out Saturday morning.
Record-Breaking Summer
A couple more storms and we’re on track to make this the wettest summer on record in Fort McMurray.
Huffman says, either way, we’ve already broken one rainfall record this year.
“If you were to compare June, which had 189.5 mm this year, to the 30-year average of 73.3 mm, you’d find that the June of 2019 was the wettest on record in Fort McMurray.”
Looking at the seven-day forecast, after Saturday it’s expected to be rain-free until at least next Wednesday.
