Syncrude is celebrating a big milestone at their operations north of Fort McMurray.
The oil company was able to produce their three billionth barrel of oil earlier in October.
They are the first company to hit this milestone at one site in Canada’s oilsands.
“We are proud to celebrate this remarkable achievement with our employees and retirees, whose tenacity and know-how enabled us to produce three billion barrels over the past 41 years,” said Doreen Cole, Syncrude’s Managing Director, in a release.
“You need strong partnerships to succeed and we’ve really benefited from productive relationships with so many different groups in the region.”
The company’s first barrel of oil was produced in 1978. Since then, they’ve employed more than 24,000 employees who’ve helped them reach this record.
Syncrude announced the accomplishment on Monday with Premier Jason Kenney.
Kenney took to social media soon after calling the milestone “a remarkable achievement of technology, innovation, and the Alberta work ethic that has energized our economy for decades.”
