Husky Basketball Teams Pull Off Weekend Sweep, Women Ranked 12th In Canada

The Keyano Huskies Women’s Basketball squad remains unbeaten through four games.

The Huskies earned a pair of victories over the Concordia Thunder this weekend, first a 68-51 victory on Friday, followed by a tight 65-64 win on Saturday.

The wins put the Huskies at 4-and-0 to start the season and places them 12th on the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s National Rankings.

Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News while the undefeated record is nice – there’s still room to improve.

“It gives us a little more swagger. I think for us, we’re trying to get better every day and every weekend. As I said, it’s always good to win but for us right now, it’s about getting better and can we do better than the week before.”

On Friday, Moiyan Toure led the way for Keyano – with 17 points and nine boards, while Gytonne Everett added 13 and Aliyah Johnson notched 11.

On Saturday, it was Johnson who led the Huskies with 21 points, while Everett again contributed 13.

Vigilance says the first four games has been impressive sample size for what the team is capable of.

“Very happy to be undefeated. I think we’re playing okay basketball; we’re not playing our greatest – but we’re competing, trying to get better every single day. We have to sort out the Saturday woes, but with a young team that we have, we will work that out.”

The Huskies enjoy a bye week before getting back on the court next weekend.

It was a weekend of W’s on the road as the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team is also coming off a pair of big W’s.

The Husky men were at Concordia this weekend – where they topped the Thunder on Friday 86-82 and followed that up with a 79-68 win on Saturday.

The wins put Keyano at 3-1 to start the campaign.

Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga tells Mix News he’s proud of the effort his team gave.

“We found a way to put three straight wins together, I thought that was the most important thing,” Wielenga said. “I thought the guys did a really good job Friday in a tight game in doing whatever it took to find a way to win. Saturday, I thought we controlled the game a bit better, did a better job on the defensive end and found a way to get the sweep.”

Stefan Jovcic led the way Friday with 24 points, while Noah Horobitz-Simpson added 18 and Angelo Mbituyimana scored 20 off the bench.

Saturday saw Jo Michel notch a double-double, with 25 points and 10 boards, while Dejon Davis added 15.

Wielenga says despite the wins, there’s still room for plenty of growth.

“We have a long way to go and a lot of work to do as a team. Even the video we broke down from Saturday night, we made a lot of mistakes and that could really hurt us if we don’t clean that up. But we’re still growing, still learning and at the same time we’re excited to have won three in a row.”

The Huskies men also get the by before getting back on the hardwood next weekend.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
