The 2019 Poppy Campaign is underway.

The campaign starts on the last Friday of October and runs until Remembrance Day on November 11.

President of the Fort McMurray Legion Pat Duggan tells Mix News this will help them support local veterans over the next year.

“Some people think that poppy funds goes towards running the legions, the day to day activities – they don’t. This goes directly to all of our charitable work that we do.”

He adds the campaign also serves as another reminder to recognize everyone who’s served our country.

“We who send our other sons and daughters off to represent Canada in conflict, when they come back this is how we help help assist them as well.”

Mayor Don Scott was the first to get his poppy.

He went to social media to recognize the occasion.

In past years, the Legion has averaged between $60,000 and $70,000. Duggan adds they don’t have a goal and are happy with any amount they can get.

If you want to wear a poppy, you can find them in various locations around Wood Buffalo, including the mall, banks, and grocery stores.
