Keyano Basketball Towering Competition Following Pair Of Weekend Wins

Another weekend sweep marks nine straight wins for the Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team.

The Huskies steamrolled Grande Prairie Regional College over the weekend – crushing them 110-78 on Friday, before topping them 93-63 on Saturday.

The wins improve Keyano to 9-1 on the season – good for first place in the ACAC North Division.

Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga tells Mix News while both were impressive wins – they still have to make some adjustments.

“We had two really explosive quarters this weekend where we really shut them down. The first quarter today (Saturday) was 25-5. But we have a lot of work to do. We had a few stretches we didn’t play so well defensively but the stretches we did will really help us in the long run. We’ve still got to watch some tape and see how we can get better.”

Friday’s win saw an all-round effort from Keyano’s starting five and its bench.

Four of the Huskies’ starters topped double digits in points – lead by Dejon Davis who had 21 points and 7 rebounds.

That effort carried into Saturday, where all five starters eclipsed double digits, lead by Jo Michel’s 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Wielenga says it’s good to see everyone is contributing to the team’s hot start.

“We take what the defence gives us and try not to force anything. Some nights it’s going to be one guy, other nights it will be someone else. On Friday, we had five guys hit double figures and that happened again today. We just have to use our weapons to our strength so when they take something away from us, we will be unselfish and give the next guy the ball.”

Keyano hits the road this week – with a doubleheader on tap against Kings University.

The Keyano Huskies Women’s basketball squad continue to roll – coming off another weekend sweep.

The Huskies shut down Grand Prairie Regional College – with a 75-37 win on Friday, followed by a 65-46 win on Saturday.

With the wins – Keyano is now 8-2 on the season and tied for first place in the ACAC North Division.

Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News the team still has few areas to improve heading down the stretch.

“The girls didn’t play their greatest but at this point in the season, it’s about getting that W. Some things I know we could’ve done better but we didn’t. It’s important moving forward, we have two more games left before the semester is over. We’re hoping to ride that momentum into next weekend.”

Kaleigh Sellers lead the way Friday with 19 points, while Joy Victor added 17 and Aaliyah Johnson posted 14.

Saturday saw Johnson and Sellers score 15 and 14 points respectively, while Moiyan Toure added 8 points and had a monster day on the boards with 15 rebounds.

Vigilance feels so far this season, his team has been a defensive juggernaut to kick off the year.

“It’s one of the things we really focused on. I think this year, the girls really bought into some things. We’re still struggling, but at the end of the day, when you work hard and play as a team – defence is going to be a lot easier.”

The Huskies wrap up their first semester with a doubleheader this weekend against Kings University.
