The municipality is considering expropriating a property in order to build an emergency egress road.
Wood Buffalo council will meet on Tuesday where they’ll discuss legally taking over the area after negotiations were unsuccessful with the property’s owner.
The RMWB says the area is needed for the project, which will connect Draper to Saprae Creek, to help improve the traffic flow in the case of another emergency.
Neighbouring properties can’t be used for the road as they have slope stability issues.
Council will vote on whether to start the expropriation process.
If approved, a notice will be sent to the landowner and a proposed payment, based upon market value established by an appraisal, will be offered.
The municipality says they’ve met multiple times with the owner and have presented a formal offer, however, they’ve now lost communications with him.
The hope is to have construction start sometime in 2020.
The egress route was first introduced by the former Wood Buffalo Recovery Committee back in 2016.
Council will discuss this and other topics when they meet in the council chambers on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
