The Keyano Huskies women’s basketball team’s 12 game win streak has officially been ended.
The Huskies fell on Friday in NAIT in a 78-63 loss but bounced back on Saturday – winning by a score of 63-58.
Keyano sits 17-3 on the season – good for 1st in the ACAC North.
Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News their goal has not changed since the season began.
“Our goal is to finish number one, that has been our goal since day one. We’ve done nothing yet to secure that, we’ve got four games left against two good schools so, we’ve still got to come out and play well. Our incentive is to be that number one seed and keep it going into playoffs.”
Marijana Besic came off the bench and scored a team-high 13 points on Friday, while Moiyan Toure posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Besic again led the scoring on Saturday with another 13-point effort.
Now Keyano sets their sights on this weekends homestand against Concordia.
Playing against a team that’s fighting for their playoff lives – Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News they can’t take their opponents for granted.
“They’re playing well and have been playing well all season. Their record is not an indication of how good that basketball team is so, we’ve got to come in battle-ready. And if we do the things we do well, we’ll be okay.”
Tip-off for Friday’s game is 6 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
Husky Men Continue Remarkable Season, Extend Winning Streak To Four Games
The Huskies men’s basketball team keep rolling through the competition
Keyano topped NAIT in their doubleheader this weekend, winning Friday 90-87 and following that up with a 97-77 win on Saturday.
That’s four straight wins for the squad – who improve to 18-2 on the year.
Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga says since their last loss a few weeks back – they’ve been unstoppable.
“I think it was a good time to take one and ever since then we’ve been playing pretty good basketball. We’ve got two weekends left before provincials so, we are just really going to do our best to continue getting better and do the things we need to do to keep playing our best basketball.”
Five players hit double digits on Friday, lead by Dejon Davis’s 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Noah Horobetz Simpson added 18 points and 12 boards.
On Saturday, six players posted double digits, with Angelo Mbituyimana leading the way with 25 points off the bench.
The team now sets its sights on a visiting Concordia squad fighting for their playoff lives.
Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga tells Mix News they don’t plan on showing any mercy.
“We are playing for first. We want that number one seed and that was a goal we wanted. If we win both games this weekend, we guarantee that. As much as they are playing for something, so are we and it’s going to be an intense couple of games. It’ll be our last home games of the year, so we want to make them count on our home floor.”
Tip-off for Friday’s game is 8 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
