The province is potentially dealing with its first case of the coronavirus.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, told reporters on Thursday they’re having tests done to 100 per cent confirm whether it is the virus.

The person in question is a Calgary woman in her 50’s who recently traveled on the Grand Princess Cruise Ship in California.

Hinshaw says the woman was back in the province for a week before she went into self-isolation.

“The information that’s been shared with me doesn’t indicate that this person had many contacts in that time period but the details of that are still to come.”

Those who did come into contact are being reached out to by public officials and are being instructed to stay at home for two weeks.

The woman returned to Alberta on February 21 before isolating herself on February 28. She’s currently recovering at home and is expected to make a full recovery.

Hinshaw says they know that other Albertans have also been on that Cruise Ship.

“I would like to ask anyone in Alberta who was aboard the Grand Princess Cruise Ship in the last two weeks to please stay at home until 14-days have passed since they left the cruise, even if they are feeling well.”

Meanwhile, the risk is still low that the virus will spread across the province.

“We have been preparing for this since the virus first appeared in January,” added Hinshaw. “We have proven processes and well-trained teams to protect Albertans.”

Moving forward, anyone who feels under the weather is asked to stay at home. People are being reminded to build regular habits of washing their hands.
