This brings the total of impaired drivers caught by the Sheriffs to nearly 4,000 since they were given authority to investigate those offences.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis says in a statement that impaired driving is a leading criminal cause of death in Canada, and adding the Sheriff Highway Patrol to that enforcement effort has made Alberta roads safer.

In addition, nearly 60,000 tickets were issued for speeding, distracted driving, commercial vehicle safety enforcement, and other traffic safety offences last year.

The Sheriff Highway Patrol services roughly 30,000 kilometres of roads across Alberta.
