Carbon Price Increasing Today, Gas up over three cents per litre

There were some protests across the country, as the national carbon price increased on April Fool’s Day.

The national price on pollution is rising by 15-dollars per tonne.

That means filling an average tank with gas will cost an extra dollar and 65 cents.

Diesel fuel emits more carbon, and the increase is slightly more. As of today the price for a litre of diesel will include 21.39 cents in carbon price, up from 17.38 cents, and increase of just over four cents per litre.

By law, the government returns 90 percent of what it collects in the carbon price, or carbon tax in the form of rebates.

In Alberta, the rebate will increase starting with the payment this month by 64 dollars for a family of four.

In Atlantic Canada, where people who use heating oil were given a temporary pause in the carbon price, the rebates will be slightly lower.

Protesters were on the highways in various parts of the province to complain about the increase, waving signs and honking horns.
