Edmonton Man Charged With Child Exploitation Following U.S. Homeland Security Tip

EDMONTON, Alberta— An Edmonton man has been charged with child sexual exploitation following an investigation by Alberta’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit.

Trevor Smiley, 54, faces charges of creating, transmitting, accessing, and possessing child pornography. His arrest followed a tip from U.S. Homeland Security linking him to Jason Davis, a 41-year-old man from Cooper City, Florida, who was charged with similar offenses.

Davis was arrested on July 31, 2024, and appeared in court the following day as part of an investigation by Homeland Security and the South Florida Internet Crimes Against Children task force. Authorities allege that Smiley had been in communication with Davis and had shared child sexual exploitation material.

“It’s incredibly concerning to see these acts happening in our community, and even more so when we understand the connections of the people involved,” said Sgt. Randy Poon of the ICE unit.

Investigators say the probe uncovered large-scale online group chats used to share explicit images and videos of children. Forensic technicians are examining devices seized from Smiley. Police are urging anyone with information on the accused or his alleged crimes to come forward.
