Wood Buffalo RCMP Warn Public Against False Social Media Reports
Fort McMurray, Alberta – The Wood Buffalo RCMP are warning residents about false rumours circulating on social media after a post in the “Fort McMurray Girl Gang” Facebook group claimed there was a serial killer in downtown Fort McMurray.
Police say they understand the fear and anxiety such rumours can create but assure the public that no such investigation is underway.
“This type of behaviour can ultimately result in criminal and/or civil liability for those spreading misinformation or attempting to engage in vigilante justice,” RCMP said in a statement. They encourage residents to remain vigilant but rely on verified information from trusted sources.
The RCMP advise the public to treat social media claims with skepticism unless they come from an official source.
