MP Laila Goodridge Calls for “Carbon Tax Election” Amid Rising Food Bank Use 

OTTAWA, Ontario — Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray-Cold Lake, Laila Goodridge, called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to hold a “carbon tax election,” citing the financial burden of the federal carbon tax as a major driver of rising living costs. Goodridge made the appeal during Question Period on Monday, pointing to the significant increase in food bank usage across Canada, particularly in her riding.

Goodridge pointed out the Cold Lake Food Bank has seen a nearly 44 per cent surge in demand over the past two years. “The carbon tax is driving up the cost of groceries, gas, and heating, making things more difficult for families and Food Banks that are pushed to their limit,” said Goodridge. “Will the Prime Minister admit his carbon tax isn’t working, and call a carbon tax election?”

The minority Liberal government has faced increasing criticism this fall, including from within its own ranks, as concerns over the cost of living, housing, immigration, and foreign interference dominate the national discussion. Despite inflation dropping below 3 per cent, food prices remain high, and Goodridge says that struggling families are looking for relief.
