RCMP to Crack Down on Impaired Driving in Alberta

RCMP Remind Albertans of the Dangers of Impaired Driving Ahead of Holiday Season

With holiday celebrations in full swing, Alberta RCMP are reminding motorists about the dangers of impaired driving as part of National Safe Driving Week.

Last December, 537 impaired drivers were removed from Alberta roads, with 49 of those individuals impaired by drugs, or a combination of the two. According to MADD Canada, 12 per cent of cannabis users admit to driving while impaired, highlighting the growing concern over drug-impaired driving. RCMP are urging everyone to plan ahead and find a safe ride home if they’ve consumed alcohol or drugs.

RCMP say driving while impaired is a criminal offence and extremely dangerous. Sgt. Darin Turnbull of the Alberta RCMP Traffic Unit says police will be focused on nabbing impaired drivers this month. “With all the festivities that December brings, we have planned checkstops all month long,” said Turnbull.

Police are also asking party hosts to ensure their guests have a safe place to stay or a sober ride home.
