Winter Road to Fort Chipewyan Opens to Heavier Vehicles

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The load limit on the winter road between Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan has been increased to 15,000 kilograms. The increase means larger vehicles, including fuel trucks, will begin using the route starting Tuesday, December 31, at 10 a.m.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is advising motorists to exercise caution with heavier traffic expected on the road. Vehicles exceeding 15,000 kilograms are still prohibited from travelling to prevent damage to the ice road and ensure safety. Crews are continuing to monitor conditions, and further increases to load limits are expected as ice thickens.

Drivers should be prepared for steep ramps at river ice crossings, as crews are unable to build gentler slopes until ice levels improve.

The winter trail to La Loche, Saskatchewan remains closed while workers continue to prepare the route for motorists.

Drivers are advised to stay on the right-hand side of the road, particularly on hills, and to drive according to conditions. Heavy vehicles, including fuel trucks and semi-trailers, must have permits to use the winter road. Drivers should remain cautious, as posted signage may not cover all potential hazards.

The municipality will announce updates on load limits and trail openings as they become available.

Updates on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road are available at rmwb.ca/winterroads, through the Winter Road Hotline at 1-866-743-6111, or via the RMWB’s social media channels.
