Alberta Energy Takes Center Stage in Premier Smith’s Mar-a-Lago Diplomacy

Smith Highlights Alberta Energy in Weekend Meeting with Trump

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate over the weekend. During her discussions with President-elect Trump, she spoke of the critical importance of Alberta’s energy exports to the American economy and energy security.

“We had a friendly and constructive conversation during which I emphasized the mutual importance of the U.S.-Canada energy relationship, and specifically how hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy exports from Alberta,” Smith said in a statement following the visit.

During the trip, which included meetings with members of Trump’s incoming administration, as well as policymakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties, Smith engaged with key allies of the incoming administration. She described the discussions as encouraging and reiterated her commitment to advancing Alberta’s interests with both federal and state officials in the United States, regardless of political affiliation

“On behalf of Albertans, I will continue to engage in constructive dialogue and diplomacy with the incoming administration and elected officials,” Smith added.

Smith’s visit comes ahead of Trump’s inauguration on January 20, an event she will also be attending. She stressed the importance of preserving the long-standing security alliance and economic partnership between Canada and the United States, calling it “one of the most important security alliances on earth and the largest economic partnership in history.”

“We need to preserve our independence while we grow this critical partnership for the benefit of Canadians and Americans for generations to come,” Smith said.

Since Trump’s election on November 5, 2024, Premier Smith has made a concerted effort to secure Alberta’s energy sector and demonstrate its role as a cornerstone of the Canada-U.S. relationship.
