Stomach Bug Outbreak in Fort McMurray School Amid Canada-Wide Rise in Norovirus

Norovirus Cases on the Rise Across Canada and Alberta

Canada is experiencing an increase in norovirus cases, often referred to as the “winter stomach bug,” according to Health Canada. The illness causes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and low-grade fever. Alberta Health Services (AHS) has reported an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at one school in Fort McMurray, though it has not been confirmed as norovirus.

The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that Alberta is seeing a high incidence of the illness. Norovirus spreads easily through person-to-person contact and can linger on contaminated surfaces for several days. The virus is not eliminated by hand sanitizer, making frequent handwashing with soap, especially after using the bathroom, the most effective method of prevention.

Health officials also recommend staying home if you or your child feels unwell and avoiding contact with infected individuals. Surfaces contaminated by vomiting or diarrhea should be cleaned and disinfected immediately to prevent further spread.

Recent outbreaks have affected regions across Canada, including an incident at Guelph University where over 300 students became ill. If you have symptoms or concerns, AHS advises contacting a healthcare provider or calling Health Link at 8-1-1.
