Driver Fined $6,000 for Overweight Load on Fort Chipewyan Winter Road

Truck Driver Fined for Overweight Load on Fort Chipewyan Winter Road

FORT MCMURRAY, AB — A truck driver is facing a hefty fine after allegedly exceeding weight restrictions on the Fort Chipewyan winter road earlier last month.

According to the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), the truck was travelling the route on January 9, and was well over the posted 15,000-kilogram weight limit in place at the time. The driver was issued a $6,000 fine under the municipality’s roads and transportation bylaw, though the charge has not yet been proven in court.

The municipality is reminding all motorists to always adhere to posted weight limits on winter roads. The RMWB says that overweight vehicles can damage the winter road which serves as a vital supply link between Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray. The seasonal route is used for transporting essential goods like groceries, fuel, and other supplies to the remote hamlet.
