No Damage After 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake in Western Alberta

Western Alberta Hit by 5.2-Magnitude Tremor, No Injuries Reported

No damage or injuries have been reported after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck western Alberta on Thursday morning.

The tremor occurred around 8:45 a.m. approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Grande Cache, about 400 kilometres west of Edmonton. The earthquake was felt in several surrounding communities including Edson, Whitecourt, and as far away as Grande Prairie.

Dr. Rebecca Salvage, a postdoctoral associate in seismology at the University of Calgary’s Department of Geoscience, said earthquakes in Alberta are relatively rare.

The last significant tremor in the province occurred in November 2022 near Peace River. That 5.6-magnitude earthquake sent shockwaves across northern Alberta, with reports of tremors reaching as far as Fort McMurray and Edmonton.
