RCMP Crack Down on Speeding and Traffic Violations on Highway 63 and Highway 28 Blitz
REDWATER, Alta. – More than 50 drivers are facing traffic tickets after a major enforcement blitz by Redwater RCMP on Highways 63 and 28 last Friday.
The crackdown, conducted in partnership with RCMP Traffic Services, Alberta Sheriffs, and enforcement officers from Sturgeon and Thorhild counties, targeted excessive speed and intersection violations. Officers issued 53 tickets, including 33 for speeding and 15 for failing to stop at a stop sign. Two motorists were caught driving unregistered vehicles, while another was cited for driving with an expired license.
Cpl. Dillon Vahey, Operations NCO for the Redwater RCMP, said the increased enforcement comes in response to a troubling number of collisions in the region.
“During the last year, the Redwater RCMP has responded to 52 injury collisions and two fatal collisions,” Vahey said in a statement. “These proactive efforts by Alberta’s RCMP demonstrate our commitment to rural road safety and traffic enforcement.”
The Redwater area has long been considered a high-risk stretch for vehicle accidents, particularly involving drivers traveling to and from Fort McMurray. Authorities are reminding motorists that highway speeds decrease when approaching rural communities and secondary highways.
“With the positive change in temperatures and melting snow, we’re reminding everyone to do their part to keep the roadways safe,” the RCMP said in a release.
RCMP say they will continue targeted enforcement throughout the region and are urging all drivers to follow posted speed limits and traffic laws to prevent further collisions.
