Martin Long Sworn In as Alberta’s New Infrastructure Minister After Guthrie’s Resignation
EDMONTON — Just two days after the sudden resignation of Peter Guthrie as Alberta’s Minister of Infrastructure, Premier Danielle Smith has appointed Martin Long, the MLA for West Yellowhead, to take over the portfolio.
Long was sworn in on February 27. The move is a promotion for the former parliamentary secretary, who has held multiple roles in government, including positions related to small business, tourism, economic development, and most recently, rural health.
Guthrie’s resignation earlier this week sent shockwaves through the Alberta government. He cited concerns over alleged corruption in Alberta Health Services (AHS) contracts and procurement, stating he could no longer serve in cabinet under the current circumstances. His departure added to ongoing controversy surrounding the province’s restructuring of AHS and its contract management.
Despite the turmoil, Smith expressed confidence in Long’s ability to handle the infrastructure portfolio. “He is an extremely hard worker, and I have full confidence in his ability to work with me and our cabinet colleagues to deliver on our government’s priorities,” Smith said.
Long acknowledged the challenges ahead but said he’s eager to take on the role. “Our province is growing, and it’s an exciting time to lead a ministry that will continue building infrastructure to meet the needs of Albertans today and for the future,” he said.
His appointment comes as the province prepares to roll out a significant infrastructure investment plan. Budget 2025’s Capital Plan earmarks $26.1 billion over the next three years—an increase of $1.1 billion from the previous budget. Of that, $2.6 billion will be allocated to new schools and modernization projects to accommodate Alberta’s growing population.
