RMWB Raises Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Load Limit as Cooler Weather Returns

Weight Limit Increased on Fort Chipewyan Winter Road as Cooler Weather Returns

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has increased the weight limit on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road to 45,000 kilograms as cooler weather stabilizes conditions.

Municipal officials are urging heavy vehicle operators, including fuel trucks and semi-trailers, to make necessary trips as soon as possible, as temperatures can fluctuate rapidly this time of year. All heavy vehicles require a permit before using the route, with details available on the RMWB website or through The Pulse service.

According to historical data from the past ten years, the Fort Chipewyan route typically shuts down between mid-March and early April. Last year, it closed on March 26 at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, the winter road to La Loche, Sask., has already officially closed for the season.
