RMWB Encouraging Canada Day Light Displays
FORT MCMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) will encourage residents to decorate their homes with lights for Canada Day this year after a motion passed at last week’s council meeting.
Councillor Dogar initially proposed that the municipality install light displays and encourage homeowners to do the same to honour the national holiday. However, concerns over summer daylight, and cost were brought up by several at the meeting. On July 1, Fort McMurray typically experiences over 17 hours of daylight and the remainder of the time is considered to be twilight. Further, the RMWB already spends over $149,000 on Canada beautification and festivities. An amendment, to Dogar’s motion was proposed and voted on.
The final motion directs the RMWB to simply encourage residents to light their homes in patriotic colours on July 1.
The motion passed with near-unanimous support, with only Councillor Waquan opposing.
