Alberta Snowstorm Leaves One Dead, Strands Motorists
A powerful snowstorm swept through central and southern Alberta over the weekend, dumping more than a foot of snow in the Edmonton region and causing chaos on highways.
RCMP responded to nearly 150 collisions as treacherous conditions led to multiple crashes. A tragic accident near Killam, southeast of Edmonton, claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl and sent four others to hospital.
Commercial traffic was also severely impacted. Eastbound lanes of Highway 16 were blocked for hours after multiple semi-trucks jackknifed. A Red Arrow bus traveling between Edmonton and Fort McMurray was involved in a collision on Highway 28, though no serious injuries were reported.
The storm, dubbed an “Alberta Clipper,” left Edmonton and surrounding areas digging out, while Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region were spared the worst of the winter blast.
