Have you ever heard of disc rot?
It’s when the reflective layer on DVDs, CDs, or other media begins to break down, it can cause the data on the disc to be completely lost or corrupted.
Disc rot can be triggered by a bunch of different factors, like chemical reactions, exposure to heat, humidity, or light, oxidation, and even deep scratches on the disc.
Unfortunately, once disc rot begins and the reflective layer on a CD or DVD starts to break down, there’s no way to fix it. Your best best is to just prevent it from happening.
To prevent disc rot, store your DVDs in their original cases and keep them in a cool, dry, dark place. Clean them with a microfiber cloth to remove dust, and handle them carefully to avoid scratches.
If you own DVDs made by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment between 2006 and 2008, you might be eligible for replacement discs for specific titles.
