Liberals yet to announce candidate as nomination deadline nears in Fort McMurray–Cold Lake
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — With less than a week remaining for candidates to file their paperwork with Elections Canada, the Liberal Party of Canada has yet to announce a contender for Fort McMurray–Cold Lake in the upcoming federal election.
Incumbent Conservative Party of Canada candidate, Laila Goodridge, is the only person officially registered with Elections Canada. The People’s Party of Canada has named Alan Clarke as their nominee, while the NDP has confirmed You-Ju Choi will represent them on the April 28 ballot. Both Clarke and Choi have yet to officially file their paperwork.
The Liberal Party’s official website does not list a candidate for the riding, making Fort McMurray–Cold Lake one of only 14 districts across Canada still awaiting confirmation of a Liberal nominee. The party did reach out to Harvard Media News on Tuesday evening to confirm they intend to run a candidate in Fort McMurray – Cold Lake, and are just awaiting confirmation before releasing the candidates name and information.
The absence of a declared Liberal candidate caused some pundits to wonder if the LPC would contest this traditionally conservative stronghold, however the party now says they intend to run a candidate. In the 2021 federal election, Goodridge secured over 67 per cent of the vote in a landslide victory. The deadline for candidate nominations as April 5, so there is still time for the Liberals to put forward a name.
