Fyre Fest 2.0: Expecting luxury, getting lessons in how not to throw a party!
Well here we are again…with another update about the second round of the failed “Fyre Festival”
If you’re just reading about this for the first time, here’s a quick rundown of events.
A luxury music festival was set to take place from April 28–30 and May 5–7, 2017 on the island of Great Exuma, Bahamas. Co-organizers Billy McFarland (an American businessman) and rapper Ja Rule originally created the event to promote the company’s Fyre app for booking music talent.
The event was promoted by social media influencers, actors, reality TV stars and models including Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Hailey Baldwin, and Emily Ratajkowski (who were paid to promote), promising a luxury, star-studded event.
Once the opening weekend arrived, the MANY problems started. There were issues with security, food, accommodation, medical services, and even artist relations. Pretty much everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong. Guests paid hundreds to thousands of dollars, only to end up with flooded tents and gross sandwiches in styrofoam containers.
Billy McFarland pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud to defraud investors and ticket holders, and a second count to defraud a ticket vendor. He was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay US$26 million. At least eight lawsuits were filed against McFarland, accusing organizers of defrauding ticket buyers. Several of these lawsuits were seeking class action status, with one demanding over $100 million in damages and an additional $2 million in judgment.
Fast forward to 2025. Fyre Fest 2.0. There has been not one, but TWO suggested locations for 2.0 (Isla Mujeres and Playa Del Carmen – both in Mexico) who have BOTH said there has been no request for permits for a festival this size, or talks with their governments.
As of April 9th, there is no official location, NOT ONE SINGLE ARTIST IS SCHEDULED, and what’s even funnier is that officials have said that the initial permit from March 18th states that Fyre Fest 2 will be held at Martina Beach Club May 30th-June 2nd, with a 250-person limit, and will only run for 12 hours total, from midnight to 4:00 a.m. each day, from May 30th to June 1st.
WHAT’S EVEN FUNNIER IS THAT TICKETS ARE NO LONGER ON SALE.
Safe to say Fyre Fest 2.0 is failed as well, and we should be expecting another documentary on Netflix?
