Affordable Housing Project for Métis Families Reaches Milestone in Conklin

Conklin Indigenous Housing Initiative Completes Phase 1

CONKLIN, Alberta — The first phase of the Conklin Indigenous Housing Initiative has wrapped up. The initiative aims to provide new affordable housing units for Métis families in the hamlet of Conklin.

The Alberta Government has invested $4.4 million in the project, which includes the construction of 15 homes: five four-bedroom units and ten two- or three-bedroom units. An additional $2 million was provided by Cenovus Energy, and the Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee provided $1 million. Land for the development was donated by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

Located approximately 150 kilometres south-southeast of Fort McMurray, the housing initiative aims to address critical housing shortages in the area. Brian Jean, MLA for Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche, praised the collaborative effort. “Being able to partner with Indigenous and Métis communities makes this a big win for Wood Buffalo,” he said.

The project represents a significant step toward improving housing access for Métis families in Conklin.
