A recent suggestion by U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump that Canada could become the 51st state of America is being met with widespread resistance from Canadians. Trump, recently joked about it with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during a meeting at his Mar-a-Lago retreat, who has again floated the idea in new public comments.
A new survey by Leger, Canada’s largest market research firm may pour some cold water on Trump’s aspirations. According to the study, only 13 per cent of Canadians are open to the idea of merging with the United States. Support for the proposal is highest among members of the People’s Party of Canada, with 25 per cent expressing approval. In contrast, 82 per cent of Canadians strongly oppose the notion of Canada becoming an American state.
