Fort Chipewyan Winter Road Opens to Light Vehicles
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The winter road connecting Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan will open to traffic on Tuesday, December 17. However, the road will be limited to vehicles weighing 5,000 kilograms or less.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) advises drivers to exercise caution, drive to conditions, and be prepared for rough spots along the road. High-clearance 4×4 vehicles are strongly recommended.
Crews spent the weekend completing snow ramps and clearing snow for safe two-way traffic, but motorists should keep an eye out for workers and equipment still working on and maintaining the route.
The municipality reminds drivers to obey speed limits, as speeding can damage the road and create dangerous ice conditions, particularly in the delta section. Fast-moving vehicles can generate waves beneath the ice, potentially causing structural damage or sudden ice breaks.
Load limits will be increased when conditions allow. Heavier vehicles using the road before weight restrictions are lifted could face significant fines.
The La Loche Winter Trail remains closed as crews await safe ice thickness on the Christina River to complete the eastern portion of the trail.
