Alberta RCMP Relaunch Operation Cold Start to Curb Vehicle Theft
As temperatures dip and Albertans warm their cars, police are launching Operation Cold Start to prevent vehicle thefts. From Jan. 20 to Jan. 24, RCMP and law enforcement agencies across Alberta will be checking on idling vehicles to ensure they are locked and secured.
Cpl. Mike Black of the Alberta RCMP’s Auto Theft Unit says the campaign aims to educate the public, not penalize them. “Leaving your vehicle running to keep it warm seems convenient for you, but it’s also convenient for opportunistic thieves looking for a ride or a tool to commit further crimes,” he said.
Police will provide advice on preventing theft, such as using remote starters, locking car doors, and parking in visible, well-lit areas. They also suggest using anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks and avoiding leaving valuables in vehicles.
Vehicle theft doesn’t just impact owners, Black said, adding that stolen cars can be used for other crimes, sold illegally, and auto theft drives up already high insurance costs.
