If you haven’t heard yet, there’s a “city killer-sized” asteroid heading our way which MIGHT (but probably not) hit earth on December 22nd, 2032.
NASA says Asteroid 2024 YR4, which was first detected on December 27, 2024, has estimated diameter of 40 to 90 meters (130 to 300 feet) and could potentially (but probably not) hit somewhere along a “risk corridor” which NASA said stretches across the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, the Arabian Sea, and South Asia. The impact COULD (but probably won’t) cause damage as far as 50 km (30 mi) from the impact site.
Currently, the asteroid is the most dangerous space object near Earth.
As of now, the asteroid is heading AWAY from Earth, however, it’ll be back with it’s next close approach taking place on December 17th 2028. In those 3 years, scientists likely won’t be able to observe the massive rock from ground-based telescopes until it returns.
When it comes to the probability of impact, it’s like a yo-yo.
NASA has been updating the chances of the asteroid hitting earth from a 1-in-83 chance since it was first spotted. It has since moved to 1-in-67, to 1-in-53, to 1-in-43, to 1-in-38, to 1-in-32. As of February 20th, NASA had downgraded the risk of the asteroid hitting Earth in 2032 to 1.5 per cent, or a 1-in-67 chance, down from a high of a 1-in-32 chance, which was the highest odds yet of collision.
BUT DON’T WORRY, THE PREDICTIONS HAVE GONE DOWN ONCE AGAIN!
As of Thursday February 21st, NASA made yet ANOTHER update, and there is now a 1-in-360 chance or 0.28%
I’ll keep you posted, so check back here for all the updates!
