Province Cuts Homelessness Funding, Federal Grants Offer Relief
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is facing a nearly half-million-dollar shortfall in homelessness funding after the Alberta government announced changes to its funding model. Starting April 1, the province will transition to a direct funding model, eliminating the RMWB’s role in administering provincial homelessness dollars.
The change will result in the loss of 30 housing placements and the elimination of a homelessness prevention program. Mayor Sandy Bowman expressed deep concern, stating, “We have been on target for functional zero homelessness, which would be an incredible achievement. Changing the approach puts a very vulnerable segment of the population at risk.”
Despite the provincial cuts, the RMWB has secured nearly $2 million in federal funding to support local homelessness initiatives. The funding, approved by the Homelessness Initiatives Strategic Committee (HISC), will be distributed to non-profits such as the Centre of Hope, The Salvation Army, and the Wood Buffalo Wellness Society.
The federal grants will help mitigate some of the impacts of the provincial funding shortfall, but challenges remain. The RMWB warns of increased unsheltered and chronic homelessness in the community.
Mayor Bowman remains committed to advocating for additional support, emphasizing the importance of maintaining progress toward ending homelessness in the region.
