RCMP seize stolen vehicles and firearms in rural property search
Smoky Lake, Alta. — A Smoky Lake man is in custody and 35 firearms have been seized following an RCMP search of a rural property about three hours south of Fort McMurray.
Mounties say they searched a farm on Township Road 594 on March 19 as part of an ongoing investigation into stolen property. During the search they recovered a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck, a 2013 snowmobile, and a trailer, all reported stolen. The truck was traced back to Fort Saskatchewan, and police say most targeted properties in the area are seasonal homes.
Gregory Huk, 25, of Smoky Lake County is charged with possession of stolen property, careless storage of a firearm, prohibited weapons/devices, and possession of a firearm while unauthorized. RCMP say Huk had no prior history of property crimes. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Boyle court on March 25.
Smoky Lake RCMP say property crime is on the rise in the area, and investigations are ongoing. “We take every file as a special investigation and work toward alleviating property crime one step at a time,” said Sgt. Anita Doktor. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Smoky Lake detachment.
