Monarchs Top Irish For First Win Of 2019

The Fort McMurray Monarchs have earned their first victory of 2019.

The Monarchs overcame a turnover riddled-first half to top the Airdrie Irish on Saturday night by a score of 41-20.

The win puts Fort McMurray at 1-1 on the season.

Head Coach Kevin Garbuio tells Mix News while the win is positive – there are still a few kinks the team needs to iron out.

“The game was actually closer than the score indicated. We’ve got to play better in the red zone, and I think we’ll see the film and make some corrections. We’re excited for Cold Lake this week. They have a lot of guys on their team from the Monarchs’ past.”

Garbuio notes they need to keep up the good work on their homefield if they want to keep momentum this season.

“That’s why its important to get those wins at home. We’ve got to try and split those road games. If we can get to 6-2, we should be able to get some homefield in the playoffs. And that’s where we’ve been really strong. We’ve always been a really strong team at home in the playoffs.”

The Monarchs head to Cold Lake for a week 4 matchup with the Jets.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
