Weather Catcher Being Dismantled Within Next Month

The downtown weather catcher will soon be seeing its final days.

Wood Buffalo council approved dismantling the ‘eyesore’ at a meeting on Tuesday.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Mayor Don Scott. “I would have went out and torn it down myself if needed.”

The weather catcher was constructed in 2015 for $2.2 million and was planned to be the focal point of Jubilee Plaza.

Councillor Phil Meagher also apologized for being on the council that approved the project.

It cost the municipality around $23,000 annually to operate and maintain. It had also become a safety hazard after people tried climbing it.

“It’s not worth it to keep that thing up and it would serve no useful purpose – it was simply a giant eyesore in this region,” added Scott.

A RFP is being sent out for a company to dismantle the weather catcher.

Administration expects it should be gone within the next month – costing around $20, 000.
