A Wood Buffalo RCMP officer has been found not guilty in relation to the August 2016 death of 41-year-old Tracy Janvier.

Michelle Phillips was in a Fort McMurray courtroom on Friday for the end of her trial, after being charged with two counts of dangerous driving.

Back on August 21, 2016, Wood Buffalo RCMP received numerous calls of Janvier walking southbound in the middle of Highway 881, around 75 km south of Fort McMurray.

That night, Phillips was dispatched to the scene; however, while on route she received another call, stating the man had been struck by a pickup truck.

The occupants of the truck, Janvier’s aunt and her partner Jim Cardinal, stopped to report the incident and were attempting to provide aid.

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team, who investigated matter, alleged Phillips drove past several parked vehicles that were pulled over eventually driving over Janvier, killing him.

Cardinal was also injured in the incident when Phillips’ cruiser struck his hand.

The decision puts an end to the months-long trial.
