Report: Wood Buffalo Youngest Community in Canada

A report suggests Wood Buffalo is the youngest community across Canada.

Point 2 Homes collected data from the 2016 census, the last federal population count, to determine the number of seniors in all the major communities across the country.

The real estate company was trying to figure out where the older generations prefer to live.

Wood Buffalo came in at the bottom of the list with just 12 per cent of our population being 55 years or older.

Only three other communities had a population under 20 per cent – Grande Prairie and Airdrie at 16 per cent and Milton, Ontario at 18 per cent.

According to the 2006 census, Wood Buffalo also had the lowest senior population at just 9 per cent, the only community at single digits.

Despite being at the bottom of the list, the RMWB just missed out on being in the top 10 for the biggest increase of senior population from 2006 to 2016 with a 41 per cent rise.

Meanwhile, the municipality has been looking at ways to encourage more seniors to call Wood Buffalo home, including the construction of the continuing care facility at Willow Square.
