A Fort McMurray student is being recognized for her volunteering and social justice work.

Fajar Khan, who attended Westwood Community High School, is one of eight people who received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Award in Edmonton on Tuesday from Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell.

Khan’s long resume includes serving as chair for the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Youth and working and volunteering with the Canadian Mental Health Association, UNICEF, United Way, and Students Against Drunk Driving.

She also founded the Northern Lights Youth Sisters Foundation, which encourages Muslim women to participate in the community, network, and have access to mentorship opportunities.

Fajar also studied at Keyano College and is now off to the University of Alberta to complete her Bachelor of Science degree.

The Citizenship Medal recognizes students for their outstanding citizenship, leadership, community service and volunteerism.

Along with a medal, each recipient receives a $5,000 scholarship to further their personal development, as they become Alberta’s future leaders.
