UPDATE: Unknown Substance Found at Post Office Not Suspicious

An unknown substance found at a Canada Post office in downtown Fort McMurray is not suspicious.

Regional Emergency Services were called to the building on Riedel Street on Thursday after two individuals came into contact with six envelopes that allegedly had an unknown material.

In an update Friday morning, the RMWB says during RES’ assessment of the bundle of mail, nothing suspicious was found.

The two people were taken to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre, however, the municipality notes the pair weren’t showing any symptoms for assessment during transport.

The area around the post office was closed off for much of the afternoon as a safety precaution. It was turned over to Wood  Buffalo RCMP Thursday evening.

Crews also checked the Canada Post on Hardin Street but determined there was no concern for safety to the public or employees.

Meanwhile, Keyano College was also shut down for a short time on Thursday after receiving a threat over the phone. Wood Buffalo RCMP checked the facilities and cleared the situation after 45 minutes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP.
