You’ll have to wait a bit longer to use the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road.
The municipality is delaying opening the road due to current ice conditions at the Des Rochers River.
The water crossing is currently not safe for any vehicles to drive over them.
They were hoping to open it to the public on December 15, however, there’s currently no timeline.
The RMWB is doing regular testing to determine when the ice is thick enough to support vehicles weighing 5,000 kg or lower.
Load limits will rise throughout the winter based on the weather and maintenance work being done.
Meanwhile, motorists are being reminded to avoid using the route before it opens as it can potentially put you and others at risk of a serious incident.
Driving on the road ahead of time could also delay its opening.
Residents can get updates and find more information on the road by visiting the RMWB’s website.
