The Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team just can’t seem to be stopped.
The Husky men earned another pair of wins – topping Lakeland College on Friday by a score of 84-64 before besting them again on Saturday 84-74.
The weekend extends their winning streak to 13 games and improves their record to 13-and-1 on the season.
Head Coach Jeremy Wielenga tells Mix News Lakeland did not make the wins easy to come by.
“Saturday, we had a real good first quarter. We had a hot start, but you must give them credit. They never quit, they chipped away and made it a close game in the end but our guys found a way to get some key stops and scores at the right time and it was good to get those wins on our home floor.”
Keyano was led on Friday by a monster game from Noah Horobetz Simpson.
The forward had a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
On Saturday, the Huskies were led by Stefan Jovcic 19 points, while Horobetz Simpson put up another double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds).
Wielenga says it was good to see his team get right back to its winning ways.
“I think we’re shaking the rust off still, but I say to the guys – it’s good to learn when we win more than it is when we lose so, it’s a little easier to breakdown the tapes. So, we made mistakes and need to work on a few things, but it was good to see the guys pull it out and get a pair of W’s.”
Keyano is ranked 5th in the nation as of January 7th, according to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings.
They can push for 15 straight wins when they hit the road this weekend to face Grande Prairie Regional College.
Women Continue To Roll Under The Radar 
The Keyano Huskies Women’s basketball team kicked off the new year with a bang.
The Huskies pulled off a weekend sweep – topping Lakeland College on Friday by a score of 49-47 – and again on Saturday by a score of 55-50.
The wins improve Keyano to 12-2 on the season.
Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance tells Mix News it was a good weekend to shake off some cobwebs.
“Good to get back into competitive games. It wasn’t our best showing but at this point in the season, it’s about getting some wins, learning and moving forward and eventually getting to a point where we are peaking around playoff time.”
Joy Victor lead the scoring for Keyano on Friday with 14 points and star forward Moiyan Toure added 12 points and an incredible 18 rebounds on route to the win.
On Saturday, it was another defensively sound effort – with Aaliyah Johnson scoring 16, while Victor and Toure scored 13 and 12 respectively.
While the Huskies are currently first in the ACAC North Division, the CCAA rankings still elude them.
That’s something that Vigilance is okay with.
“I guess it’s really good to play at home, as the girls are very comfortable here. We showed a lot of toughness and adversity but it’s nice to have that depth to lean on which propelled us to these two wins.”
The Huskies are on the road this weekend – taking on Grande Prairie Regional College.
