Keyano Holds First Public Information Session For $16.8M Art Centre

Multiple residents came out on Thursday to learn more about Keyano College’s Art Centre.

The post-secondary school held a public engagement session at the Keyano Theatre where residents could see concepts and speak with people familiar with the project.

Wood Buffalo council approved $16.8 million in November for the project which will include an art gallery.

Bailey Yarkie, who attended the information session, tells Mix News there are many in the community who’ll benefit from this centre.

“The arts are a growing industry, I think it’s important to invest… we don’t have a dedicated art gallery or like a space made to create art, so I think it’s what the community really needs.”

Emma Carter echoed the same message.

“I’m really excited to sink my teeth into all of Keyano’s plans and just get hyped about it.”

Since its approval, many have voiced their concerns about the project.

This information session was held for residents to learn more about the project rather than openly debate the centre.

Keyano President Dr. Trent Keough says he understands not everyone will get behind the project, however, those who came out seemed to be very interested.

“I’m very happy with the types of questions individuals brought. There were questions around logistics, there were questions around what is the nature of this project, how complex is it.”

Right now, the community’s main place to showcase art is the Kirschner Family Comunity Art Gallery at MacDonald Island Park.

Local Artist Shawn McClure says there needs to be a bigger space that will encourage more to highlight their work in Wood Buffalo.

“It’d be nice to have an art gallery here in Fort McMurray, we wouldn’t have to go out of town to find places to put your work.”

Keyano is planning on holding more public engagement sessions. In the meantime, residents can take a survey online.
