Finally, some positive news in the firefighting effort

Some positive news in the fire front yesterday, as Alberta Transportation opened up Highway 881 south of Janvier.

The highway was previously closed due to fire conditions and poor visibility. The situation is still being monitored.

Evacuation alerts are still in effect for Janvier and for the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation. Residents are still reminded to be ready to evacuate on short notice.

In the Fort McMurray Forest Area, there are 23 active wildfires in the region, 10 of which are out of control, while 8 are considered being held, and 5 are under control.

The largest fire remains Fire 47 in the Cattail Complex, which surpassed 100,000 hectares and is roughly the size of San Antonio, Texas.

Further south, Fire 77 near the Steepbank River has increased to over 15,200 hectares. The Algar Complex is similar in size.
